It was so much fun researching fairy tales for this book. Each chapter of The Perfect Duke starts with a line or two from a fairy tale, or a comment from a fairy tale character. I discovered that Prince Charming really is...well...charming. And the dwarves have a unique way of looking at the world.
In the Perfect Duke, Garret is not a very likeable fellow to start with, rather like the "Captain" in The Sound of Music. When I was researching this book I e-mailed Jo Beverly as to what rules a Duke should follow, and she told me that, much like a 2000 pound gorilla, he can pretty much do what he likes.
There is hope for him, however. My heroine, Cara, helped me rediscover fairy tales and their magic. I think you'll find she does the same for the Marble Duke. Enjoy their story!
About the Author
"Once Upon a Time" are four of Dawn's favorite words. Her love of story became a love of romance when she read Georgette Heyer's, Devil's Cub. It inspired her to write stories with strong characters that discover love is never easy, but always worthwhile. Dawn's written several award-winning novels set in Georgian England- an era filled with rules and intrigue. Her characters often defy "Society" as they pursue love, run away, pursue, run away - well, you get the idea.
Then again, she might write romance in order to do the research. What other profession encourages you to sit in the audience at Harlequin's Male Model search, and take notes, or just sigh?
Dawn lives in a Victorian home in Upstate New York with her husband and very independent cats. When she's not writing, she's singing, gardening, learning to play the harp or wood carving.

Outstanding Read!

THE PERFECT DUKE is one story I could not put down!
Garret Weston, the Duke of Kendal, was betrothed when he was a child to Lady Caroline Pemberton, the Earl of Pemberton's daughter. She was thought to be dead by drowning but was actually kidnapped when six years old and raised by a country vicar as Cara McClure. She has no idea of her true heritage.
Garret's older brother Edward was supposed to be the Duke after their father's death but Edward died in a boating accident. Garret felt responsible for his brother's death and was urged by his brutally mean grandfather to be the perfect Duke that his brother would have been.
If Cara was raised by a vicar, then she can hardly be an appropriate wife for the perfect duke. Moreover, Garret already has a woman in mind to be his perfect wife--Lady Regina Stanton. His plans were derailed by the discovery that Lady Caroline is still alive through a private investigator that he hired.
Since Garret is an honorable man, he will see if Lady Caroline is still acceptable as his duchess by watching her in his employ. He will hire her as governess to his brother's daughter, Rachael. He feels he has hatched the perfect plan to see if she will be able to function in the ton and not embarrass the Kendal name.
He is haughty and mean just like his grandfather wanted him to be. In fact, he even looks just like his grandfather's nasty portrait. He is cruel to Cara but she is kind to him. She does not behave as he thinks she should. He has met his match and slowly his heart starts to melt, but will she care?
It was great to see the characters develop and grow before my eyes. I could not believe the arrogance of the Duke and how innocent and trusting Cara is. There was a host of characters that had their own personalities, too. Mallory, the blunt sister of the Duke. The kindhearted vicar. The haughty butler and sentimental cook. I felt like I knew them all intimately before the end of the story.
Also, I was amazed by the twists and turns in the plot and I would definitely read this again. I did not want the story to end.
THE PERFECT DUKE is an outstanding read for anyone who loves romance in 1787, London, England. The love story made me cry. There is so much to tell but I don't want to spoil it for the other readers.
I give this five out of five stars and a thumbs up. I loved it!

Loved it!

Oh my gosh! This is such a wonderful story. It captured me from the first page and held me in its thrall to the very last word. The depth of emotion in both characters is incredible and while this is a storyline that is familiar, Ms. Ireland gives it a new twist, which is very refreshing.
Garret Weston, the Duke of Kendal has a dilemma. His long lost fiancée has been found, but she's grown up believing she's Cara McClure, the daughter of a vicar, instead of Lady Caroline Pemberton. Determined to discover whether Caroline can be the duchess he needs, he hires her as a governess for his niece and brings her to Belcraven.
Cara immediately recognizes Garret as the prince in her dreams, but without his wonderful smile. Garret and Cara fight the growing attraction between them. He must wait until he sees whether she has the proper training to be his duchess and she believes that she is far beneath his station. But love is stronger and they give into their passions.I don't want to spoil this for anyone so I'll just say it's well worth your time to read this great story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful tale and highly recommend it to all who enjoy a true regency romance. This is a story that I'll be reading again. One phrase held great meaning to me and I want to share it: "And suddenly all those little nothing moments in her life became more precious than the rarest of gems".

Really not great

I had a bad day with books yesterday, and this was the first of the two that I bought. I was intrigued because it's about a duke and I love stories about dukes. The summary sounded good and I took a chance and it didn't pay off.
It's another one of those "modern" historicals with modern attitudes, disguising itself as a Regency. There is also the fairytale element, which sometimes works but most often doesn't and here it doesn't work at all.
A quick summary: Our H was engaged to the daughter of an earl, the h, for years. The daughter had gone missing many years previously and was presumed dead. Our H was just about to become engaged to someone else when he hears that the h has been found. She'd been adopted as a young girl by a vicar and his wife. She'd been kidnapped and given to the vicar, who was unaware of her true identity. The H decides to employ the h as a governess to his niece for the Summer, to see if the h has the character needed to be his duchess. He tells no one that he's found the h, particularly not her family as the 2 families have been feuding for a long time. You can see why the story sounded engaging and why I was tempted to buy it.

The problems that I had were the following:
The H was a huge ass and there was no way I could like him even when the author tried to redeem him towards the end. It wasn't even that he was a cruel alpha, he was just an ass all the way through. The idea being he was trying to live up to his grandfather's image of a duke and that image wasn't a very nice one. I hated the fact that the H had a plan to persuade the h to marry him before revealing her true identity to her, so that he could avoid a problem with her real family. It created issues for them both the whole way through as she felt unworthy of his attention, being a lowly vicar's daughter.
I hated the fact that the innocent h decided to seduce the duke about 60% into the book and this was the book's one main love scene. I didn't feel the circumstances were plausible and she was after all a vicar's daughter and unlikely to initiate a sex scene.
I then really hated the fact that the H leaves the h and goes off to get engaged to the other woman mentioned at the beginning of the book. If he truly had deep feelings for her, then nothing would have persuaded him to do that. How are we supposed to believe in his love for her?
I could go on and on but there isn't any point so I'll just say that the book was a disappointment and not worth buying. I gave it 2 stars solely because it wasn't riddled with errors like the other book I bought yesterday.
