Pleasant writing style; lacks references with which to ascertain its accuracy of Cook's life.

Dugard's book concerning Captain James Cook is an interesting read concerning the life of this noteworthy explorer and mariner. However, it lacks references with which to fact check Dugard's story. There are MANY statements made by Dugard that appear to be conjecture, especially in light of the fact that letters between James and Elizabeth (his wife) were burned by Elizabeth. Dugard claims to have examined Cook's papers, and does periodically include statements purportedly made by Cook. Unfortunately, he so again without referencing them as a professional writer would have done. It's simply unclear as to their accuracy and context, requiring interested readers to investigate other scholarly works on Cook to fact check.
Dugard's writing style is enjoyable though, and I thought he told a balanced story covering Cooks early years, entrance into the Royal Navy, early mapping work in Newfoundland, and the Endeavour and Resolution I voyages. However, he rushes telling the story of the Resolution II voyage and disappointedly ends the story with Cook's death on Hawaii. Dugard introduces readers to a variety of officers and crew sailing under Cook, and it would have been interesting to learn how some of these people responded to Cook's death and the challenges of losing their Captain. Reader's are left wondering what became of "the People" of the Resolution II voyage after Cook's death. Dugard explains with several brief notes in his epilogue, what becomes of Clerke, Sandwich, Elizabeth, and Cook's sons.
Dugard also shares several brief experiences he personally makes to London, Newport (Rhode Island), and the island of Hawaii as part of his "research" on Cook's life and death. He then writes in his epilogue that he traveled thousands of miles to see Cook's world; to places such as Whitby (England), Cape Town (South Africa), Botany Bay (Australia), Alaska, Canada, and the Endeavour Inlet (New Zealand). However, he fails to relate to readers his experiences visiting these other locals that Cook also tread. For me, Dugard's attempt to interweave his personal experiences as several places falter, particularly in light of the fact that he visited far more and didn't bother to share those travel experiences with readers. It would have been better, in my opinion, had he left the scant smattering of personal travels out of the book, and used the pages to reference his sources. While I enjoyed his writing style, I feel I will have to find another account on the life and death of Captain James Cook to fact check against the person that Dugard describes in his book.
