From the Author
I often go back and look at reviews.Well, I'm not going to lie ... I obsessively go back and look at reviews! There is a common theme in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Book 1, Escaping The Dead. It's that it is too short, the 1st book "should be longer." I take this as a compliment, if it's too short that means you want to read more right? But still I think I owe an explanation ... and I wanted to give some background on this silly story called "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" [rant on] Yeah the clever title that Tina Fey people came up with 2 years after WTF was published, wow how original! woo hoo that's so funny and ironic at the same time hahaha [rant off]Disclaimer: I admit this bit of storytelling will not be my best work.During my last deployment to Afghanistan, I had loads of downtime.(more like bored out of my mind crawling up the walls time). I wasn't part of one of those units that do all the cool stuff like zipping around in space shuttles, dropping into Taliban compounds at 2am, chewing loads of bubble gum and kicking tons of ass. Mark Wahlberg will not be making a movie about my time overseas. No most of my job involved long, long, hours in a watch tower or checkpoint(ECP). Yeah, think Jimmy Hendriks, that was my theme song.During some of that time, (well ... when I wasn't watching a lone donkey or camel and wondering if it was strapped with explosives, or staring at the same bit of wall and watching the sun move), I would open a spiral green notebook and jot down any crazy ideas that would pop into my head. It's just a hobby of mine. I like to write on deployments because it takes my brain away from the suck that is often reality. In a past life, (it feels like a million years ago now) I served in Operation Joint Guard in Bosnia. (Google it, loads of excitement) One of my thoughts then was that while out running long convoy operations we would get ambushed and left behind. (just hold onto that for a sec..)Well again fast forward, I'm wasting away on tower watch and we had VIPs touring our facility. Part of my job was walking them through my area, these guys love stupid questions, I think the worse the question the higher the diplomat. Anyhow, 'The Walking Dead' was huge at the time, so a common theme became, "Hey what would you do if there was a Zombie Apocalypse?" (Hahaha I know right, who wants to talk about boring stuff like Mortars, IEDS, Afghan Army guys shooting us in the back, when there are zombies. Hilarious question Sir, let me think. )I was asked this question so much I started to plan for it, how would we defend against it. That was now how I spent my idle time. That planning merged with my convoy worst nightmare theme, suddenly became a story. Every day I wrote a bit more. By the time I came home, I had a nice lifers book(ask a vet) filled with handwritten pages.I took that book and nearly tossed it in a drawer to be forgotten or trashed, but for some reason, the story and the characters stuck with me, so I showed it to a couple trusted friends. They were blown away, well probably just drunk and amused that I wrote a story in a spiral notebook. But anyhow they encouraged me to get it formatted and published, one of them told me about this self-publishing thing and how easy it was.So hey. I put this little 20,000-word story together and dropped it on amazon(I told nobody.. for a week because failure is one of my top 10... well maybe top 5 fears and if it bombed I could easily just walk away) So I posted it up and went about my merry way. I had no idea that it would turn into a series that has now sold over 250,000 copies.Anyhow to end a rambling.... I agree the story first is too short, I could pull it down, and re-write it, I could merge it with the other books. Maybe one day I will.  But to me, it's a cornerstone, the first block of a foundation that got me into this crazy business of telling stories. It is a reflection piece to me, I go back and read it and I can almost smell the burn-pit, the cold of a - degree formation, and the comradeship of brothers I looked out for every day and knew they looked out for me.In the end, it's a silly story that helped me meet loads of great folks that encouraged me to keep writing, people that I now highly respect and consider family. Thanks for bearing with me! I hope I didn't bore you.

Fast, Accurate, and Violent
By R.Mayotte
I stumbled upon the author by accident, via veteran Facebook pages. I liked his page and figured I'd give one of his books a read. From beginning to end Escaping the Dead moved at a breakneck pace. Barely slowing down to catch a breath or check your gear this story will keep you moving and wanting for more. Accurate references to military gear and even more accurate characters make this book immersive as hell.

It's a decent story, but rather short. I would consider buying other books in the series if this had been longer. As it is, I find these too short to justify the pricing of the other books in the series.

Very short tale
By Amazon Customer
Volume one is only 81 pages, it barely gets you interested before it ends. Doesn't even end in a cliffhanger. I'm disappointed that this "book" was so short and had no apparent story.
