Barbara Rossing teaches New Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, and is an ordained Lutheran minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She has also written Journeys Through Revelation: Apocalyptic Hope for Today The Choice Between Two Cities: Whore, Bride, and Empire in the Apocalypse, etc. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 212-page hardcover edition.]
She wrote in the Preface to this 2004 book, "Today's end-times writings draw on a method for looking at prophecy that was invented less than two hundred years ago... Many other Christians read the biblical story differently, and I am one of them. The Bible does not provide a predictive screenplay for worldwide violence and disaster in the Middle East... Biblical prophets are not precictors of end-time events, they are inspired voices calling people to repentance and justice... This book is written for people young and old who are puzzled about the biblical book of Revelation and its end-time consequences for today. This book is written for those who have questions about the simplistic biblical script ... promoted by the whole prophecy industry of [Tim] LaHaye, [Hal] Lindsey, and others." (Pg. xi)
She suggests, "People are attracted to [John Nelson] Darby's dispensationalist system with its Rapture theology because it is so comprehensive and RATIONAL... Proponents admit that the dispensationalist system is not spelled out in any single passage in the Bible. Nevertheless they insist that a comprehensive system is necessary and that Darby's dispensationalism, with its divisions of history and its two-stage future return of Christ, is 'the only system' that can make sense of otherwise contradictory biblical passages." (Pg. 24)
She points out, "According to Darby ... the first 483 years of the Daniel prophecy were fulfilled in ancient Israel's history only up through week number sixty-nine. But something happened! With the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, 'God obviously stopped "the prophetic stopwatch" one week short of the end...' asserts Lindsey, since Rome's destruction of the Jerusalem temple in 70 A.D. did not follow the chronology of Daniel in the literalist way dispensationalists require." (Pg. 26) She dryly comments, "In his 1970 best-selling The Late Great Planet Earth, Lindsey invented the now-popular interpretation of Jesus' fig tree parable in Matthew 24 as a text in which 'Jesus predicts an extremely important time clue' about the date for his return... Never mind that Jesus himself didn't identify the fig tree as Israel. Lindsey interpreted Israel as the fig tree; and 'putting forth its leaves' was Israel becoming a sovereign state..." (Pg. 50)
Of Matthew 24:29-32, she suggests, "Dispensationalists make the leap of assuming that the person 'taken' in this passage is a born-again Christian who is taken up to heaven, while the person 'left' is an unbeliever who is left behind for judgment. This is a huge leap, since Jesus himself never specifies whether Christians should desire to be taken or to be left! In the overall context of Matthew's Gospel, both the verbs 'taken' and 'left' ... can be either positive or negative... Matthew's Gospel is not clear on whether 'taken' or 'left' is the desire fate---whether being 'taken' is analogous to Noah rescuing people by taking them into the ark to save them... or whether being 'taken' rather means taken away for judgment." (Pg. 178-179)
This is an excellent "alternative" perspective to the popular Pre-Trib, Pre-Mill interpretations that are so popular these days; it should be of interest to students of biblical prophecy, whether they agree with all of her positions, or not.
