More of the author's brilliant lyricism, but some troubling imagery.

Francesca Lia Block has been my favorite author for over 16 years. I devour every work as it comes out: YA, adult, poems, short stories, erotica, non-fiction. No other author's books are permitted to share the shelves I've put aside for her works. I can't even bring myself to loan out my Block books. Instead, I just buy additional copies of her work to gift to my friends, family, even a couple of strangers. In addition to her lyricism, unique plot lines, and characters that have created my fantasy family, one of the practical things I admire about FLB's work is her sensitive handling of taboo topics like molestation and incest. So I'm disappointed that for the first time I am coming across a story that is incredibly insensitive.
The title story: "Lay Me Out Softly," was emotionally confusing, perhaps even disturbing. I saw that it was originally published in a collection by Susie Bright, so I assumed it would have at least a taste of erotism, and of course I loved "Nymph," and more recently the erotic nature of her novel "The Elementals." And perhaps it was this assumption that caused me to let my guard down, because I was totally unprepared for the brutality and the callousness with which the author treats her character Girl/Jade. The rape of Girl triggered me in ways other works by Block have not. And unfortunately the rape didn't move along the plot or add anything of value to the story. While in other works the sexual violence has been part of what makes a character who they are, or added to the sense of fear the readers are meant to feel-that doesn't appear to be the case for "Lay Me Out Softly." To make matters worse, it was emotionally confusing to go from such a savage scene on one page to some very sensual, loving scenes a few pages later. Furthermore, Girl's reaction to the rape was absolutely unbelievable.
Block's work has been my go-to source of comfort when I am down for years. And while I don't believe Ms. Block owes her audience anything, I still feel betrayed by how insensitive this particular story has been told.
Consider this review the trigger warning that is not found anywhere else.

Magical but a little repetitive

Francesca Lia Block writes with a magical flair in everything she does, and this book of short stories is no exception. The only downside: one might feel as though they're reading a food review for the same restaurant each time a character goes out to eat, and there's a bit of repetitiveness when it comes to many characters' interests and personalities. Still, a good read.

Healing, Magical Tales

Francesa Lia Block's stories are magical healers, and this fantastic collection of Block's short stories is no exception. Francesca weaves her magic into tales of loss, pain and fear, leaving her characters, and her readers, with a sense of hope. Lay Me Out Softly demonstrates her deft hand in stories from young adult to erotica, all of which never shy away from the ugliness of life; rather, Francesca conveys beauty in the darkness with her signature style of sensual prose. "Revenant's Anonymous" is zombie loving with a very human touch, while "Unless You Change" forces us to expand our understanding of sight and examine our fear of mortality. "The Real Housewives of Mount Olympus," originally published in Francesca Lia Block's brilliant anthology "Love Magick", captures reality TV obsession, Goddess style, with hilarious, and often touching, results. "Underthings" may just be my favorite story, though each story is so wonderful that it's hard to choose! More than a journey of self-discovery, "Underthings" has a protagonist that struggles to reclaim her own name while repeatedly getting her heart broken, her undergarments a reflection of herself. The final story, "Saturn's Return: Bad Things", is the perfect end to this collection, a story that truly embodies the healing spirit that runs throughout Francesca's work. I only wish "Lay Me Out Softly" was in physical book form, as I would love to be able to add it to my collection of FLB books on my shelves! For now, I will continue to keep it on my phone and take a little bit of FLB's healing magic with me wherever I go.
