The material in this book is taken from the wartime US intelligence journal Tactical and Technical Trends. It was originally collected from British and US combat reports, captured Japanese documents, P.O.W. debriefs and Japanese training manuals. It provides a priceless glimpse into how the men in the front lines learned about their enemy, and presents the modern reader with an invaluable insight into how the events of the war with Japan were perceived at the time when they actually unfolded. The reports also provide us with a host of information concerning the minor aspects of the thousands of tactical combats being waged day in and day out which expand our knowledge of the realities of the fighting in World War II.

Interest little book
By Amazon Customer
For anyone interesting in the tactics of the Japanese army during WW2, this is a very interesting book. Personally, it wasn't too interesting reading the book, but as it happened, after reading that book, I went on to read a book called "The Brave Japanese" by Kenneth Harrison, who fought against the Japanese in Malaya that time with the British Army. There were many descriptions of the actions he was involved in, and how his unit was surrounded by the japanese and so on, what happened to his unit came about exactly because the Japanese Army was adopting and executing those tactical manoeuvres as described in the book by Bob Carruthers. In a way, i was glad I read this book first before I read the book by Kenneth Harrison.

Rare insight into Japanese tactics
By Philip S. Wullschleger
The author seems have compiled material to contradict the commonly held belief that Japanese tactics in WW2 were mainly suicidal frontal charges. At least in offical military documents manuver and envelopment are stressed. I guess the Japanese commanders at Guadalcanal forgot to read the manual. For military buffs a must read.
