Masterful book on photography

I purchased photos from Desmond Downs, the author of this book, for the first time about 7 years ago. I ordered them from a website, and when they arrived, I remember thinking, "I was in that exact spot...I used a great camera...and my photos aren't half this good. I wish I knew how he did it." Now, he's finally written a book that tells me how he got those shots. I don't labor under the delusion that the book will somehow make me as good as he is -- he's an artist, I'm a tourist -- but my photos are already better. This is going to be the book I keep on my iPad to refer to when I travel, or whenever I want to figure out why a photo doesn't look the way I want.
Desmond explains the intricacies of filtering, aperture settings, and using all the dials and buttons on my Nikon digital camera with photos, clear explanations, and easy-to-understand rationales. I've taken three classes and spent several hundred dollars on other books. But none of them came close to explaining things the way this one did. Can't wait for next weekend. Me and my Nikon have some serious shooting to do!

Good coverage of basic principles

The chapters on basics (ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc) were presented in a straightforward, easy to understand way that is superior to most beginner photography books. The book is worth getting on that basis alone. The author does get a little self-indulgent at times (e.g. all of Ch. 12), but at least he is generally entertaining while doing so.

A favorite of mine.

A true professional and a real master. Desmond presents technical information to me as I like to receive it, simply and memorably. The artistic aspects of photography come more or less naturally to many photographer I think, but the technical details are changing with new developments and constantly need review. So educators like Desmond help with the understanding in a more friendly way.
